Three-quarters are saving for retirement, while 51 percent are building an emergency fund. Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of millennials are saving for life milestones and future goals, a 10 percentage point increase compared to 2018. Despite this good news, millennials still feel behind financially compared to peers and are juggling substantial debt levels with near and long-term financial priorities. We are excited to bring this workshop series to more LIFT regions, partnering with Bank of America employees to train our advocates and enable more families to build strong financial foundations.We found that nearly one in four millennials that are saving have at least $100,000, up from 16 percent in 2018 and 8 percent in 2015. We realized that by connecting members to vital resources in the community (discounted internet, food pantries, transportation assistance) that reduce their monthly expenses, they can start to build savings for their broader goals.Īll in all, it was a hugely upLIFTing day and the LIFT-Philadelphia team is now equipped with the financial coaching tools they need to help members get ahead. Many advocates are still learning how to manage their own finances and they learned a lot of tips that will make them more confident discussing financial wellness.Īt the end of the session, we broke into small-groups to practice making budgets for LIFT members. For many LIFT members with little income, saving may seem daunting, but by putting a little away money every month they can begin to build a nest-egg for a security deposit, college classes, and life’s unexpected emergencies.īecause finances are such a personal issue, we talked about connecting your own efforts to reduce spending on everyday expenses to a member’s budgeting goals. Using three Better Money Habits™ videos from Khan Academy as teaching aid, an all-star team of Bank of America leaders talked about connecting budgeting to our member’s major life goals like getting a job, home, or education. On Friday April 4 th, 4 Bank of America professionals led a lively discussion for 20 of LIFT-Philadelphia’s staff and advocates about the financial situation of LIFT members, their critical needs, and how we can incorporate conversations about expenses and savings into our ongoing work with members. As part of our national critical needs partnership with Bank of America, we leveraged the bank’s financial coaching expertise to put on a “train-the-trainer” event for our staff and advocates in Philadelphia. Budgeting can be an uncomfortable, delicate topic, but we also know it’s an absolutely essential building block on the path to financial stability.įor Financial Literacy Month this April, we decided to launch a “Building a Financial Foundation” workshop series to train LIFT advocates on talking to members about budgeting and financial wellness. There is something about talking about money that makes just about everybody squeamish. But there is a topic that can be difficult for our advocates to broach: PERSONAL FINANCES. Advocates work side by side with members to solve the biggest challenges in their lives and this often leads to very personal conversations about circumstances that put them on shaky ground. Having to spend some $1,000 for personal protective equipment (PPE) and materials to make her salon OSHA compliant, she said there is very little of that SBA money left. It was the SBA loans that allowed Montanye to pay her two part-time employees and herself, and pay two months of rent. The downside of all of this was that she just made under $200 from this endeavor. Luckily, she was able to sell the kits online. “After some research, the police said I definitely was not allowed to sell curbside.” I thought I was in trouble,” she recalled. When I heard “prosecutor’s office,’ I started crying. “They weren’t sure if I was allowed to sell curbside, and one of the officers said they had to call the prosecutor’s office and the state to find out. One client even sent her a second check for the same amount.Īdditionally, Montanye tried to earn extra money by selling hair-coloring kits at curbside, but on the day she began selling the items, the Newton police arrived at her salon. Just as important, and perhaps more humbling, was the fact that two of her clients each sent her $100 checks. How did she manage to survive until today’s reopening? Montanye was able to receive a $4,800 Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan and a $2,000 Economic Injury Disaster Loan from the Small Business Administration (SBA). She said she is also eligible to receive Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, but has not heard from the State Department of Labor. “So, I have not collected any unemployment benefits at all,” she said. However, every time she would check on it, she would see the message: “Not payable at this time.” At that point, she was able to get through and certify her weekly benefits, but the response she received always stated “pending.” After contacting the state via email, she was able to file a claim. It was a repetitive act of futility because the site kept kicking her off … up until April 9. The day after she closed her doors, Montanye tried applying for unemployment on the state’s website. “The shutdown had been financially devastating for the business and for me, personally.” The mortgage on her home also had to be paid, and food had to be bought. With that money gone, rent, utility and supplier bills still had to be paid. Ambiance’s revenues were between $6,000 and $8,000 a month. The opening is a godsend for Montanye, who lost her sole source of income when the business shutdown on March 19.

Above the slab-or should we call it a sacrificial table?-we see the outline of an adult, likely a mother, who looks down into the face of an infant that returns her gaze. His mouth is open with a black mark that almost suggests a vain attempt to speak. In front of the slab, hidden behind figures in the foreground we see a shrouded adult figure lying prostrate in what is likely a coffin. Hidden within the patchwork are crosses that underscore the central, essentially a funereal scene of an infant on lying on a slab amidst fruit that celebrates life and candles that mark death. The contrast between hot and cold color is balanced by the symbolic meaning of blood or flame and quenching rain. Overall there is a patchwork of rectangles and squares in various shades of red, which seem to emit licks of flame into a smaller but equally patchwork sky. The painting by Tom DiSalvo is teeming with symbols composed with a post-Modern sensibility. The authors see a disparity in the necessity of expanding needs of algebra and geometry with little time spent on geometry in primary education. Knuth and Hartmann (2005) describe GSP as an interactive geometry technology that affords teachers the opportunity to focus students’ attention on specific mathematical relationships in a dynamically visual way (enhancing objects, manipulating and visualizing objects changing in slow motion simulation) that may not be otherwise possible. Student learning of mathematics and geometry can then take place, anytime, anywhere. Knuth and Hartmann (2005) agree with Marrades and Gutierrez (2000) that related technological and mathematical learning outcomes can be achieved while providing authentic learning experiences to students via accessing programs like GSP. Knuth and Hartmann (2005) further that GSP enables teachers to complement their teaching strategies by engaging students in meaningful and purposeful activities where students learn by doing where learning is situated and interlinked with being social, collaborative and interactive through ‘conceptual conversations’. The user-friendly nature of GSP as positioned by Knuth and Hartmann (2005) guides, supports, and augments students’ internal mental processes where students can create their own understanding of the mathematical concepts through ‘conceptual conversations’. One of the affordances of the technology is to quickly perform basic geometry in a very neat and effective manner. With GSP, students learn within an interface that supports a variety of potential interactions, manipulations and tools. Technology programs such as Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP), version 5.04, are designed to incorporate cognitive information-processing views of learning with a constructivist approach (Knuth & Hartmann, 2005). Geometric reasoning problems in high school mathematics such as the concept of angles formed by parallel lines and transversals continue to be problematic for high school students to visualize. Learning is being transformed with technology which includes experiencing authentic learning situations using technology. More research is necessary to determine how teachers can use The Geometer's Sketchpad most effectively in the classroom. In this way, students continue to receive the benefits of GSP throughout the year without becoming bored by its constant use. Teachers should ensure that each pair moves at a pace that allows both students to comprehend the material.īecause student interest waned when classes used The Geometer's Sketchpad every day for an extended period of time, I recommend using GSP as a tool to supplement more traditional lessons and hands-on activities rather than as the primary instrument of instruction. GSP also provides teachers with opportunities to have students participate in partner work. The research shows, however, that this improved engagement wanes over time therefore, teachers must be cautious not to overuse GSP. The dynamic nature of The Geometer's Sketchpad may lead students to improve their engagement with the material. While teachers must devote some time at the beginning of the year to training students to use GSP, the class will earn this time back in the long run because the dynamic aspects of the tool prevent teachers and students from having to draw a new figure by hand each time. Students in this environment feel a sense of control over their learning, even when the teacher is the person designing the sketches. With GSP, the classroom becomes a student-centered rather than teacher-centered environment. By using the tool's dragging features, students can observe countless examples of different figures quickly and easily. The Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP) takes the traditional pencil-and-paper geometry class and transforms it into a dynamic learning environment. The player’s basic ability is to jump, and many of the costumes offer variations on that jump. With its dozens of costumes, Balan Wonderworld feels wide but shallow. Publisher Square Enix says we can expect 80 costumes in the full game the demo includes at least 10. Later levels include a sheep costume that lets players float and a gear-shaped skirt that’s used to manipulate a clockwork world. The initial level features outfits like the Tornado Wolf, which gives the player a spin jump Jumping Jack, a kangaroo ’fit which offers a long jump and Elastiplant, which lets the player stretch to new heights. In each world, players can access a variety of costumes to gain new abilities. The game’s demo stretches across three worlds and one boss battle. The giant friendly farmer of Balan Wonderworld haunts me. Its characters feel ripped from a Nights into Dreams sequel - particularly the eponymous Balan, a flamboyant showman who pulls a young man and woman into a colorful fantasyland. The 3D action-platformer’s game world is rich with the grassy greens and energizing blue skies of a 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog game. (The full game drops in March.)īalan Wonderworld is a new project from game director Yuji Naka and artist Naoto Ohshima, and it harkens back to that duo’s early creative works at Sega. 28 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The same holds true for my time with Balan Wonderworld’s new playable demo, which arrives Thursday, Jan. But I’m glad to have known such weirdness. I saw Cats on a lark out of morbid curiosity, and still have conflicted feelings about the whole jellicle experience. Balan Wonderworld had already featured plenty of ambient dancing, but this spectacle was on an entirely new level. I beat him back into human form with a couple punches to the paw and a blast to the derrière, and we celebrated with song and dance. I sat stunned after watching an in-game musical number starring my player character and a corn farmer, who had just minutes before been transformed into a giant clownish dog by an evil wizard. The same sense of confusion and awe at witnessing Judi Dench and Idris Elba in singing cat form is evoked by Balan Wonderworld. Balan Wonderworld awakened a feeling I haven’t experienced since 2019, when I saw director Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the musical Cats in a movie theater. |
